The City of Hollywood is warning residents and businesses in low-lying and coastal areas to prepare for king tide flooding that could begin as early as Thursday, Oct. 22. The highest water levels are expected Oct. 26 through 28, and elevated tides could last through Sunday, Nov. 1.

The National Weather Service says the Oct. 26 full moon, steady strong onshore winds and weekend showers could push flooding above current moderate flood projections. The city said flooding is possible even on sunny days, especially at Hollywood Beach and other spots with low or no seawall.

Recent king tides have already flooded streets in parts of Hollywood, including sections of A1A and Hollywood Beach. City crews are monitoring conditions and have set up temporary Tiger Dams along part of the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, tidal gate panels in the South Lake area and permanent and auxiliary stormwater pumps.

The South Florida Water Management District has launched automated king tide forecasts for seven tidal stations along the east and west coasts of South Florida. The forecasts are part of a Weekly Tidal Outlook developed with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School. Residents can sign up for weekly updates through the district’s email page by selecting the “King Tide Forecast” option.
