Children in costumes spent Oct. 16 playing with dressed-up puppies at the Humane Society of Broward in Dania Beach. The shelter’s Count Barkula Halloween Festival also included trick-or-treating around the grounds.

Organizers hoped the event would lead some families to adopt a pet. Visitors who fell for a dog were asked to write down its name and kennel number so they could start the adoption process this weekend.

Caroline Crane, the shelter’s vice president of education, said the shelter is a good place for families to visit and might end up falling in love with a dog. Adoptions could not be finalized the same night, she said, but visitors could return the next day to find their pet.
