The 10th annual Hair Peace & Hope 5K Run/Walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 24, at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway. Local 10 News anchor Alexis Frazier will host the event, which raises money for people living with autoimmune conditions.

On-site registration opens at 6 a.m., and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. Awards and podium presentations begin at 9 a.m. General registration costs $35, and student registration for ages 5 to 18 costs $20. A virtual option is also available for $35 for supporters who want to take part remotely. The first 500 registered participants are guaranteed finisher medals and official race T-shirts.

The race supports people with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, a rare autoimmune disorder that can cause joint pain, muscle weakness, swelling and fatigue, and other conditions such as lupus, scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis. Founder Kay Martinek said the event started in 2016 to provide custom hair prostheses for people who lose hair during treatment. It has since expanded to help patients with medical copays, transportation and wellness resources.

All proceeds go directly to hair prostheses, medical copays and care resources for local patients. Patients who need help, and people who want to register, donate or volunteer, can sign up online through the event website.
