Fort Lauderdale United FC opened its second half of the Gainbridge Super League season with a 2-1 win over defending champion Lexington SC on Sunday evening at Amerant Bank Field. Forward Sh’nia Gordon scored both goals for the hosts.
The win came in Interim Head Coach Paul Jennison’s first match in charge, during the club’s annual “More Than Pink” game before an energized home crowd.
Gordon gave Fort Lauderdale a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Winger Abi Hugh won the ball on the left and found Gordon at the top of the box, where she faked right, cut left and fired into the far post. Five minutes after halftime, Gordon beat a defender on a solo run and finished into the far corner for her second goal of the night.
Lexington pulled one back in the 86th minute when White scored, but Fort Lauderdale held on. Jennison brought on Daniela Todd in the 64th minute and Molly McDougal in the 85th, and late substitute Jules Cagle helped anchor the back line.
The result lifts Fort Lauderdale United to 2-6-0 with 6 points. The team next plays at in-state rival Sporting JAX on Friday, Oct. 16, the second match of a three-game stretch over 11 days.
