Fort Lauderdale commissioners are considering a set of new rules for electric bicycle riders, with final approval expected by the end of the year and enforcement beginning in 2027. The city is responding to a rise in crashes involving e-bikes and is looking to improve safety.
Under the proposals, riders would have to be at least 16 years old and carry government-issued identification. E-bikes would also need to be registered with the city. Riding them inside city parks would be prohibited.
Violations would carry a $250 fine for a first offense, with later violations drawing $500 fines each, according to the source report.
The rules would not stop at e-bikes. As proposed, they would also cover e-scooters, e-skateboards, hoverboards and Onewheels, so anyone who rides those devices around the city would be affected if the commission signs off.
Residents who ride or share the roads and sidewalks with these devices should watch for the final vote, which will set the details before the rules take effect.
