Elijah Manley, a 27-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident who ran for the Democratic nomination in Florida’s 20th Congressional District this summer, is in jail on two counts of intimidation. Prosecutors say he wrote or sent a threat to kill or injure someone on Friday night. Local 10 said it has not been able to find or independently verify the social media post at the center of the case.
Manley was one of several candidates in the Democratic primary for the 20th District. He did not win.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office said a judge issued bond conditions on Thursday. Manley’s total bond is $40,000, and he has not yet appeared before a judge. The conditions include standard pretrial release, no possession of weapons or ammunition, no contact with the victims and no posting on social media.
The office will not prosecute the case because of a conflict of interest. In a statement, it said the listed victims have taken part in several charitable drives the State Attorney’s Office has organized over the years. It asked the governor’s office to assign the case to another state attorney’s office.
