Crews working on the I-395, SR 836 and I-95 project in downtown Miami have started building a mechanically stabilized earth wall that will carry westbound traffic from the MacArthur Causeway onto the new elevated Signature Bridge, the Florida Department of Transportation said.
Last weekend, workers also finished a major concrete pour for the new double-decked SR 836 roadway just west of the Miami River. The Florida Department of Transportation said the pour used one concrete pump and about 60 trucks to place 590 cubic yards of concrete, roughly 2.4 million pounds.
The $866 million project is a partnership between the state agency and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, with Archer Western and de Moya Group as the contractor. It includes the spider-like Signature Bridge over Northeast Second Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard, and it adds a lane to the northbound I-95 entrance. Officials say the goal is more capacity, smoother traffic and better safety.
Drivers should expect overnight lane changes. The northbound I-95 ramp to westbound SR 836 and the southbound I-95 ramp to westbound SR 836 will each close from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through Friday, Oct. 16, with detours posted through nearby streets such as NW Seventh Street and NW 17th Avenue.
The agency said all new concrete pavement is now finished from NE 17th to NW 29th streets and along northbound I-95 from NW Eighth to NW 17th streets. Work continues on southbound I-95 between NW 17th and NW Eighth streets. Completion is expected in late 2029.
