CROS Ministries is recruiting volunteers for its Caring Kitchen program in Delray Beach, where demand for homebound meal delivery keeps climbing. The program now serves 120 enrolled residents, and the ministry hopes to grow that number to 150 within the next year.
Caring Kitchen provides free hot meals five days a week. It also delivers meals to homebound seniors and people with disabilities in the 33444, 33445, 33446, 33483 and 33484 zip codes. Shona Castillo, the program’s director, said she gets one to two calls a day from people asking about home delivery.
The ministry needs volunteers who can make an ongoing weekly commitment. Roles include cooking, prepping and packaging meals, and delivering them. Delivery volunteers also spend time with participants, many of whom live alone. CROS also wants to extend service into east Boca Raton if it gets more help and funding.
John Gavin has delivered meals every Wednesday for about a year and a half. His route covers 35 of the enrolled residents. Lyn Greenblatt, who lives on Social Security without a car or kitchen supplies, said the meals give her healthy options she could not otherwise get.
