Broward County Public Schools rolled out a new campaign called “Safety is Shared” as National School Bus Safety Week got underway. The effort aims to warn drivers that passing a stopped school bus is dangerous and illegal, and that speeding in school zones puts children at risk.

The campaign was launched in Davie, where student leaders spoke about their work to raise awareness. Diana Ryabova, a student at Hollywood Hills High School, said newly licensed teen drivers are often distracted by friends in the car or are rushing to class, and may not register a bus ahead of them.

Broward Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn said the district wants to be ready if a crash involving a school bus affects students.

District officials said more than 1,100 buses in the county now have stop-arm detection technology. Since Sept. 9, nearly 16,000 citations have been issued.
