Law enforcement officers and residents can learn how to recognize signs of dogfighting and animal cruelty at an educational event on Oct. 24 at Broward County Animal Care in Fort Lauderdale.

The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation will present “Stop the Hurt: Fighting Is Not in Their Nature” at noon at the facility, 2400 SW 42nd St. The session will cover warning signs of animal fighting, how to report suspected abuse and responsible pet ownership. Organizers also plan to address common myths about certain dog breeds.

Dahlia Canes, the coalition’s director and founder, said animal fighting affects more than animals and puts the safety of the entire community at risk. She said giving officers and residents the knowledge to spot and report cruelty can prevent suffering and help build safer neighborhoods.

Police departments, animal welfare professionals, neighborhood groups and residents are invited to attend. Organizers say the program is meant to help officers respond to animal-related cases and give residents practical tips on protecting pets.
