The Boys and Girls Club of Miami-Dade held its “Wild About Kids” gala to raise money for after-school education, mentorship and sports programs for children across South Florida. The organization has served young people for more than eight decades.
Club president Alex Rodriguez said about 200,000 children have enrolled over the years, and roughly 6,000 take part each year. He said the club’s strength lies in its informal mentoring, not only homework help and educational programs. Staff and members build relationships with one another, he said.
The black-tie event included a silent auction and music, and it showcased moments from the club’s younger members. A dance performance by the children was the highlight of the evening, according to the event coverage.
A child in the program, Summer Annel, said she goes to the club after school, has fun, does her homework and gets help from staff. The club also gives gifts during the holidays and runs summer programs.
Rodriguez credited donors for making the work possible. He singled out the Ansin Foundation, which he described as an integral part of the organization. WSVN, which sponsors the club along with the foundation, reported on the event.
