A 22-year-old Boca Raton woman is facing two counts of battery after police say she punched, bit and swung at people inside a car in a parking lot on East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach early Sunday.
Jessica Ann Sumner first met the group at Good Night John Boy sometime after midnight, according to her arrest report. A man in the group told police she appeared very intoxicated and offered to help. She refused and walked off. When the group returned to their car in the lot at 298 E. Atlantic Ave., police say Sumner came back, became argumentative and yelled about a woman seated in the front passenger seat. Police said she leaned into the car swinging, missed that woman and struck people in the back seat instead.
When the driver got out to calm her down, police say Sumner pulled his hair and punched him in the face. Officers documented red marks on his neck, back, torso and arms, along with a bite mark on his right arm. A second man told officers Sumner bit him as he tried to step between her and his friends. A witness gave police a video of the incident.
Police also said Sumner left with the driver’s iPhone. Her roommate was tracking her live location, and officers found her at a home on SE 5th Avenue with the phone among her belongings. She told police someone at Bounce had slipped the phone into her pocket and that she believed it belonged to her roommate. The phone’s owner said he did not think she meant to steal it and declined to press charges.
Sumner was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail with bond set at $1,000 per count. She is due in court at the South County Courthouse in November. Court records show she was arrested for battery in 2024, pleaded guilty and was placed on one year of community control probation.
All charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
