Boca Raton City Manager Mark Sohaney has resigned from the city to take a new professional opportunity that will return him to work with the military community, the city announced.

Sohaney, a retired U.S. Navy captain with nearly four decades of military and executive leadership experience, previously served as commanding officer of Naval Air Station Key West and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The city said he has focused on a “people-first” approach during his tenure, working with employees and the executive leadership team on city operations and critical infrastructure priorities.

Mayor Andy Thomson praised Sohaney’s service and said the city appreciates the work he has done alongside employees. In a statement, Sohaney said the decision was not easy but that the chance to return to a mission central to his career was especially meaningful to him.

Sohaney will work with the mayor, City Council and executive staff to keep city operations running and ensure an orderly transition. The City Council will decide interim leadership arrangements and how it will choose a new city manager. The city did not announce a departure date or a timeline for that process in its release.
