Ballet Palm Beach will stage its original production of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach from Oct. 22 through Oct. 24. The performances take place in the Marshall E. Rinker Sr. Playhouse.
The company, the professional ballet company of Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, describes the work as a contemporary ballet about ambition, abandonment and identity. It draws on the life of Mary Shelley and the circumstances that led her to write the novel, which she began as a teenager during a stormy gathering on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Founding Artistic and Executive Director Colleen Smith said the story starts before the creature comes to life. Dancer Leah Walker said the production differs from most classical ballets, which tend toward fantasy, because it follows Shelley’s real process as she writes.
The show is recommended for ages 9 and older. It runs two 45-minute acts with a 20-minute intermission. Tickets and performance details are available through Ballet Palm Beach and the Kravis Center.
