Miami police announced Thursday that U.S. Marshals arrested Jamar Lionel Jenkins in the shooting death of Dwight Wells, the founder of the anti-violence group “Wheels Up, Guns Down.” Wells was shot outside his Liberty City restaurant in October 2025, a little over a year before the arrest.
Police Chief Edwin Lopez said investigators linked Jenkins to the killing through call records, a search of his car and home, and his iCloud records. Surveillance video from Oct. 20 shows people running just before Wells collapsed. Earlier, police had described the suspected shooter as wearing a dark face mask, dark hoodie, black gloves and dark pants.
Lopez said Jenkins had been arrested before on firearms charges. He said the suspect and Wells knew each other.
Lopez said the case carries weight because of Wells’s work with law enforcement and his efforts to reduce violence. “These cases don’t only impact the family; they impact the community,” he said.
Wells’s mother, Mary Brown, said the family had pleaded for justice outside the restaurant over the past year. “The family and the community got closure,” she said. Brown said she had never heard of Jenkins before his arrest.
