The City of Fort Lauderdale released a set of figures on the pump station serving the Edgewood and River Oaks neighborhoods, showing what the system did in September.
According to the city, the station pumped more than 50 million gallons in September, enough to fill about 75 Olympic swimming pools. At full power, the pumps move 880 gallons every second, which the city said is fast enough to drain an Olympic pool in under 13 minutes.
Crews also added about 4 miles of new drainage pipe, which the city said is longer than all of Las Olas Boulevard from downtown to the beach. Workers rebuilt more than 61,500 square yards of swales, almost 10 football fields’ worth, and installed 278 new drainage structures.
The pumps have operated since December 2024. They start automatically when water begins to rise and send it to the New River. The city said some water may still sit on streets during heavy rain for a time, but the pumps help it drain faster.
