The Miami Dade County Foster & Adoptive Parent Association will honor almost 100 foster and adoptive mothers at a luncheon called “Celebration of Superwoman” on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The 94th Aero Squadron, 1395 NW 57th Avenue.

The nonprofit, which describes itself as 34 years old, represents caregivers of youth in foster and adoptive care across Miami-Dade County. Organizers said the event is meant to give the mothers a day away from their children and other family members.

Affiliated Health Care Center and Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus students plan to offer health screenings when the mothers arrive. The program includes a full lunch, entertainment by vocalist Meryl Epps, an awards ceremony and a talk on stress reduction by psychiatrist Dr. Delvina Thomas. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien and School Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall are among the speakers, along with officials from the Department of Children and Families and the executive director of the National Foster Parents Association.

Foster care agencies helped select and sponsor the mothers who attend. Door prizes, including a television and hotel stays, will also be given away.

Shamele Jenkins, the association’s executive director, said the volunteers are on call around the clock and deserve recognition. The group is also seeking donors and new foster and adoptive parents. Information is available by calling 305-474-0078.
