A 43-year-old Homestead man died early Monday after his vehicle crossed the median into oncoming lanes of U.S. 27 in Belle Glade, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

Humberto Brea Cruz was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu south on the highway when he lost control for reasons investigators have not identified, according to the crash report. The car crossed the median in front of a 2015 Volvo D13 driven north by a 52-year-old Hialeah man. The Volvo driver tried to swerve left just before impact, but the Chevrolet struck the front of the Volvo.

Deputies were dispatched at 5:42 a.m. to the crash in the 13700 block of U.S. Highway 27 South. Brea Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. The Volvo driver was not hurt.

After the impact, both vehicles turned northwest, and the Volvo crossed the median into the southbound lanes. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the sheriff’s office said alcohol or drugs were not suspected.

The crash happened on a busy stretch of the Glades corridor, so drivers should expect possible delays while the scene is cleared and the investigation continues.
