Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon led a get-out-the-vote caravan through Miami-Dade County on Saturday, starting at Charles Hadley Park in Liberty City. Local elected officials and supporters joined the effort three days before the Tuesday midterm election.
The caravan made scheduled stops in Liberty City, Opa-locka and Miami Gardens. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, state Rep. Felicia Robinson and Miami Commissioner Christine King were listed as participants. U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson and Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert were set to join at the final stop.
Nixon is challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody. She told voters that rising rents are making it hard for people to stay in Miami-Dade, and she said immigration enforcement is unfairly targeting Haitian, Venezuelan and Cuban communities.
Marlon Hill, a Jamaican immigrant who has lived in the United States for about 40 years, said he wants a more compassionate approach to immigration enforcement that keeps families together.
In a separate statement, Republican U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar defended her record in District 27 and criticized the Democratic Party’s direction.
Early voting ends Sunday in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
