A driver charged in a fatal wrong-way crash on the Palmetto Expressway has taken a plea deal. Maiky Simeon pleaded guilty Friday to vehicular homicide and driving under the influence manslaughter, according to the source report.

Prosecutors said Simeon was driving the wrong way in August 2022 when he struck a car near Northwest 57th Avenue. Five teenagers died in the crash.

Under the agreement, Simeon will serve 25 years in prison with no credit for time he has already served. Had he gone to trial and been convicted, he could have faced up to 150 years behind bars.

In court, the mother of one of the victims spoke directly to Simeon. She said her daughter loved life and that she holds no hate in her heart. Simeon told the families he hopes they can forgive him and said he hopes the outcome brings them some relief.

The case drew wide attention in Miami-Dade County after the teens were killed on one of the region’s busiest highways.
