A Leadership Miami team is asking local businesses, community leaders and residents to help close a $5,000 gap in a fundraiser for music education at Charles Drew K-8 Center in Liberty City. The campaign has raised most of its $19,519.79 goal.

The project, called Project Rising Notes, is a 100-day nonprofit service effort by Tap In 2 Miami, part of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Miami Fall 48 Cohort. It partners with the American Music Initiative to expand free after-school music classes. Organizers said the money would buy new string instruments, refurbish marching drums, improve classrooms and build better storage for equipment.

The American Music Initiative already serves more than 70 students each week at Charles Drew and the Tacolcy Center. The goal is to reach more than 115 students.

Donations can be made online through the group’s MightyCause page. Donors can give any amount, and the team said sponsorships of instruments are welcome. People with unused instruments are also being asked to contribute them.

A ribbon cutting is set for Friday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 1775 NW 60th Street in Miami. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Nov. 6. Questions can be sent to tapin2miami@gmail.com.
