West Palm Beach resident Ryan Troisi is training for his first full marathon, a goal he set last year during Palm Beaches Marathon weekend. He first came to the race as a 5K participant with little running experience and said the group’s encouragement stuck with him.
Troisi said he spent most of his 20s in and out of drug addiction and tried several times to get clean before it stuck. He said he moved to West Palm Beach with only a suitcase and took the bus to look for work, starting over from nothing.
He recently marked eight years of sobriety. He married in June, and his wife will run the half marathon alongside him. Days before the race, he will have a solo art show on display in West Palm Beach.
Troisi pictured the finish on Flagler Drive and said he expects the race to push him past any limit he has reached before. He said he feels a responsibility to help others in recovery.
