Oct. 25 has been declared “Screamer Day” in honor of Dwight Wells, a South Florida activist who was killed in October 2025. The declaration was proclaimed ahead of a community event at Charles Hadley Park in Miami.

Wells’ family gave him the nickname “Screamer” when he was three months old. He founded the “Bikes Up, Guns Down” movement, which aims to reduce gun violence by steering young people toward biking.

His mother, Mary Brown, described him as kind and helpful, and said he loved children from an early age. His sister, Trawonna Barron, said he cared deeply about the kids and the community.

The honor follows the recent arrest of 39-year-old Jamar Jenkins by the U.S. Marshals in connection with Wells’ fatal shooting. The family chose to use the Sunday gathering at the park to look forward and celebrate what they called justice, while remembering Wells as a peaceful community leader.

“It means so much to me, I am so proud of my son,” Brown said.
