Nearly 150 volunteers broke ground Friday morning on 10 homes in Oakland Park, part of a Habitat for Humanity project known as Moss Estates. The annual “Seminole Hard Rock Women Build” is sponsored by WSVN-7, ABC Miami, City Home, Florida Girls Giving Back and others.

The 10 families were selected through the program, which makes homeownership possible for households that might otherwise be priced out. Future homeowners must put in 300 hours of labor, including work on other homes before their own, according to Nancy Daly, chair of the Women Build Committee.

Tashierra Richardson, a mother of a teenage son, said she had been up since 1 a.m. and went straight from work to the site. Talisha Black, a mail carrier and mother of two, learned Friday morning that her home would be in Moss Estates.

Work includes woodwork, painting, digging and preparing foundations and walls. Donor Sandra Moss of Moss Construction called the homes a place for families “to put down roots.”

Construction is expected to take about a year, so the families can move in before the holidays.
