A specialty coffee shop in Pembroke Pines is drawing attention for its Yemeni coffee and a line of crunchy pastries that owner Ayaan Malik says few other places carry.
Haraz Coffee House, at 15811 Pines Boulevard, imports its beans from Yemen. Malik said the flavor is stronger than what most customers are used to, and he compared it to Cuban coffee, which he said he has not tried but has heard is similar.
The pastry case is the main draw. Malik said the crunchy fruit pastries are the most popular item. They have a white chocolate shell with coloring and a mousse filling. The shop also sells crunchy teddy bears and, most recently, crunchy purses, which are made from thicker chocolate because they are larger.
Malik said he started looking for the fruit pastries after he could not find them nearby. He said he and his father then worked to get them made, and he believes Haraz is the first to sell the crunchy purses.
The menu also includes matcha, lattes and a mango tiramisu. Malik said the tiramisu is his favorite.
