A 63-year-old South Florida man who is terminally ill is asking for help reuniting with his wife and son before he dies. Jesus Aguirre, a U.S. citizen recovering from a lung transplant, spoke to Local 10 from his bed at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and said he may have only days left.

Aguirre’s son traveled to Miami on a tourist visa, but he was detained at the airport and deported to Mexico while his father was recovering. Aguirre’s wife, who was in the country without legal status, returned to Mexico to try to resolve her situation through legal channels. Nearly four months later, the family is still apart.

Aguirre’s son spoke to Local 10 from Torreón, Mexico. He said he and his mother traveled hours to the U.S. consulate in Juárez for an appointment, where they were told they would need to wait for a pardon. “We don’t have time because my dad is very sick right now,” he said.

Aguirre said the chance to see his wife face to face would mean everything, and he wants to thank her for always being there for him. The family is asking for help so he does not have to face his final moments alone.

Local 10 said it has contacted the State Department for comment and for more information about whether anything can be done.
