The Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach marked its 65th anniversary Wednesday morning with a Founders Day ceremony. The event included an official city proclamation from Mayor Keith James and a dry ice toast to the next 65 years.

The center opened in 1961 as a modest educational resource. It now draws thousands of visitors each year, and CEO Kate Arrizza said the community’s support shows the impact the institution has on people who walk through its doors.

James said he hopes the center inspires young people to see that they can build a career in science. Arrizza said the science center is working on a major expansion that it calls the next chapter of its story. She said the project will increase the size of the facility and expand its programming.
