Broward County Animal Care is hosting a free Halloween event this Saturday, Oct. 24, and pet adoption fees will be waived for the day.

The Pup or Treat celebration runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the county’s animal shelter at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. Organizers plan doggy trick-or-treating, a pet costume contest, a pumpkin patch, pup cups and vendors that welcome pets.

Visitors can meet adoptable dogs looking for permanent homes. Adopters will still pay the required pet registration fee, but the adoption fee is waived.

Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care, said the event is meant to bring the community together while helping more shelter pets find homes. Residents who want to adopt can look at available dogs and cats ahead of time at Broward.org/Animal.

The celebration is open to the public at no charge.
