Former President Bill Clinton is campaigning for Democrat David Jolly in Pembroke Park, stopping at an interfaith event Tuesday evening to support the party’s nominee for governor.
The visit comes as early voting gets underway across Florida. Jolly is trying to close the gap against Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, who is running to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Some recent polls show Donalds with a lead of about 8 points. Others show a much closer contest, with Jolly making notable gains among Latino voters in at least one survey. Jolly would be the first Democrat elected Florida governor since Lawton Chiles won a narrow re-election in 1994.
Clinton has typically waited until late in campaign seasons to join key races, and his appearance signals that Democrats see the governor’s race as tighter than it has appeared. Hillary Clinton is also expected to campaign for Jolly in the final two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm election.
