Students at selected Broward County public schools will get free menstrual hygiene products under a one-year pilot program the School Board approved on Oct. 13.
The district plans to choose at least seven schools that span different grade levels and communities. The products will be placed in designated student restrooms, with the goal of removing obstacles to learning and supporting student wellness.
School Board Chair Sarah Leonardi said the program is meant to help students stay focused in class and take full part in their schooling. The district will pay for the products, dispensers and restocking for the length of the pilot.
Administrators will track usage and costs and note any operational issues while they measure how well the program works. When the pilot ends, Superintendent Howard Hepburn will bring a report to the board with findings, financial effects and a recommendation on whether to expand the program or make it permanent.
The district has not yet named the schools that will take part.
