Boca Raton City Manager Mark Sohaney has resigned, and his last day will be Nov. 11, according to the city. The city announced the resignation Friday, and a city spokesperson said Sunday that the City Council will consider a resolution on next steps at its Oct. 27 meeting.
The spokesperson said the council will decide on any appointments and the timing of them. Sohaney has said he will stay on through the transition.
Sohaney said he is leaving to pursue “a new professional opportunity that will allow him to return to serving the military.” He did not name the role, and the U.S. Navy did not respond to media inquiries.
Sohaney retired from the Navy after nearly four decades. His final posts included commanding officer of Naval Air Station Key West and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. The council chose him on Aug. 13, 2025, from a short list of applicants, and he started Sept. 29, 2025. He replaced George S. Brown, who retired in 2025 and served as an emeritus city official until January.
The council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6500 Congress Ave. The meeting will also be streamed on the city’s website, YouTube and Facebook page. Agendas are posted the prior Thursday.
For residents, the vote will determine who runs day-to-day operations for the city of about 100,000 people until a successor is in place.
