The University of Miami moved to No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll released Sunday, its first time at the top since the 2002 season. The Hurricanes replaced Georgia at the summit after the Bulldogs lost at home to Auburn.
Miami earned the ranking a week after beating rival Florida State 43-35 in double overtime. The Hurricanes received 40 of the 70 first-place votes from the media panel and were 22 points ahead of No. 2 BYU.
The poll shuffle was historic. Five of the top seven teams lost, the first time that has happened in the AP poll’s 90-year history. Ohio State rounded out the top three, while Notre Dame and Georgia stayed in the top five despite close losses.
Miami is the first ACC team to be ranked No. 1 since Clemson in 2020. The Hurricanes host unranked Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Alabama fell seven spots to No. 13 after losing at Tennessee, and Texas dropped 12 spots to No. 19 following a home loss to Florida. Florida, ranked No. 20, returned to the poll after beating the Longhorns. Arizona entered at No. 25.
