Voters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will be asked to renew a special property tax that supplements teacher salaries and helps pay for school security.

The tax has been in effect since 2018 and must be renewed every four years. In 2022, it passed in Miami-Dade County with 65 percent of the vote and in Broward County with 57 percent.

Anna Fusco, president of the Broward Teachers Union, said the referendum is critical to keeping teachers in the classroom. She said educators should not have to work two or three jobs to get by, including delivery or rideshare driving, when they arrive at school for the day.

The measure has broad support from both Republicans and Democrats across South Florida, according to the report.
