More than 1,100 runners hit the streets of Hollywood Beach before sunrise for the half marathon and 5K race, battling South Florida’s heat and humidity.

Organizers said about 1,100 people took part in the event, which followed a scenic route along the beach. Participants of all ages and abilities ran or walked toward the same finish line.

Some families ran together, with parents and children sharing the experience. Others traveled from outside Florida, including runners from North Carolina. Rapper N.O.R.E. was among the well-known figures who attended.

Despite the difficult conditions, runners cheered each other on at the finish. For many, the race was less about speed or distance and more about testing themselves and connecting with the community.

The next elite event in Hollywood is scheduled for Jan. 16.
