A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. for Stephen Scantlebury, who is accused of brutally attacking nurse Leela Lal at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee.

Investigators said Scantlebury, a patient at the hospital, broke nearly every bone in Lal’s face during the attack last year. He escaped after the incident and was arrested while walking down a road.

Lal spent six months in the hospital recovering from her injuries before she was able to go home.

The hearing will determine whether Scantlebury can be released while his case moves forward. Palms West is one of the main hospitals serving the western communities of Palm Beach County, so the case has drawn attention from patients and staff alike.
