Wynwood Walls, the outdoor street art museum at 2516 NW Second Ave. in Miami, has been charging visitors since January 2021, when it switched to a paid, timed-ticket model to follow social distancing guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many readers have asked when the fees started, and the answer is that the museum has charged since it reopened that year.
Under the current prices, adults pay $12, youth ages 13 to 17 pay $5 and seniors pay $10. Children ages 12 and under still enter free. The museum says the fees cover operations, mural preservation, educational programs and staffing.
The change is new for local residents. Miami-Dade residents now get free admission at least through 2028 when they show a valid photo ID with a Miami-Dade address. All other visitors, except children 12 and under, still pay.
The announcement follows a partnership with Rockstar Games, developer of the “Grand Theft Auto” series, which Miami New Times reported earlier this week. The museum opened in 2009 and has featured more than 100 artists, including Shepard Fairey, Okuda San Miguel, Audrey Kawasaki and Fafi. For many longtime residents, it is a return to the free visits they remember from the early days of the Wynwood arts district.
