Two kittens rescued after being buried alive in Hobe Sound are recovering in foster care, according to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. Kali and Amara, both about 4 weeks old, were pulled from the ground last week by Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Investigators say 36-year-old Alba Chavez buried multiple kittens alive because she believed they were demons. Two kittens were rescued alive, two others were found dead and another remains missing, authorities said. Chavez faces criminal charges and is being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold, the sheriff’s office said.

Body camera video released by the sheriff’s office shows deputies digging to reach the animals. One deputy can be heard expressing surprise that they were still alive.

Local nurse Jennifer Jagdeo and her family took the kittens in after the Humane Society asked for help. Jagdeo said the pair were lethargic at first but are now walking, playing and drinking from bottles. The Humane Society expects them to be ready for adoption in four to six weeks.

The organization says it is looking for more foster homes and is accepting donations to its Emergency Medical Fund, which pays for lifesaving care for animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. Volunteers are also needed for animal care, events and adoptions.
