Billy Joel says he has to “take a series of tests” before he knows whether he can perform again, according to interviews with the New York Post and The Hollywood Reporter. The singer, who lives in a private Boca Raton community, spoke about his health in the reports, which the Tribune summarized.
Joel said he was diagnosed last year with normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, a disorder in which cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. He said his neurologist told him that “every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion,” which is why he cannot perform right now.
Because he can no longer drive, Joel said he is auctioning more than 70 of his motorcycles. He described himself as a rider rather than a collector.
Fans had hoped for a return to the stage. Thousands attended a Turnstiles Billy Joel tribute band concert at Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton on June 12. Joel’s wife, Alexis Roderick, and their two young daughters were reportedly in the crowd but were not announced. The family moved to Boca Raton in 2024.
