Margate’s ball fields will keep their natural grass for now. The Margate Community Redevelopment Agency voted on Oct. 14 to end negotiations with NIDY Sports Construction over converting three baseball fields to artificial turf, and to table the project.

City Manager Cale Curtis told board members the price was still too high. Negotiations brought the cost down from $4.7 million to $4.1 million, he said, but that was not enough. The plan called for removing sod from the three fields.

The board also approved an interlocal agreement with the city to move overhead utility lines underground. The CRA and its development partner, Brookfield Holdings, will relocate the lines along State Road 7 from Northwest 8th Street to Coconut Creek Parkway. The work supports the Margate City Center Development, according to city information.

A separate resolution approved an easement with Florida Power and Light Company for underground utilities at 1100 State Road 7. That work will run between Atlantic Boulevard and Coconut Creek Parkway, city information shows.
