Hialeah police have reopened an investigation into a beating that started with an argument over an unleashed dog, days after a Local 10 News story raised questions about the case.
Diener Beguria told Local 10 News that he was attacked on Sunday around 7:30 p.m. near East 19th Street and First Avenue while walking his dog with his mother. He said a loose dog ran toward him and his pet, and he froze, unsure whether the animal would attack. He said the other man then approached, hit him with a can and kept striking him.
Police initially told Local 10 News that the incident was a mutual fight. That changed Wednesday night, when detectives returned to the area to look for surveillance video. On Thursday, investigators took statements from Beguria and his mother. Detectives also expect to speak with the other person involved.
Beguria said officers told him they would have more information on the investigation next week. He said he was grateful the station had covered his story, and he believes the coverage is why the case was reopened.
