Kindergarten teachers at Bayview, Riverland, Rock Island, Sunland Park and North Side elementary schools in Fort Lauderdale have received new reading kits, the City of Fort Lauderdale said in an Instagram post. The kits were delivered by the city’s Chief Education Officer.

According to the city, each kit includes phonics match and sort activities, CVC word building cards, spelling puzzles and sight word practice. The word-building examples include “sun” and “boat.”

The city said the materials are meant to help young readers start the school year on solid footing. Early reading skills are a key part of later academic success, the post said, and the city wants to support the teachers who teach those skills every day. The city asked residents to tag an educator in the comments to say thank you.
