Giannis Antetokounmpo is starting over with the Miami Heat, and he says he wanted a change after 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. The two-time MVP and 2021 champion spoke to The Associated Press during the team’s first training camp session of the season.

The Heat gave up a large package to acquire him in a trade finalized in July. Miami sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis, along with three first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and a second-round pick. Bobby Portis Jr. came to Miami in the same deal. The draft payments will continue until 2033.

Antetokounmpo’s next contract could be worth as much as $275 million over four seasons if he signs a max extension in the coming months.

He said Miami is a place that will bring out his best. “It’s an organization that loves to compete,” he said. Coach Erik Spoelstra called the addition of a player of his caliber a rare opportunity. Klay Thompson, who joined the team in the same offseason, said Heat fans should be excited about the chance to watch the star work.

Antetokounmpo has averaged 24.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in his career. Injuries limited him last season, but his averages did not drop. He is also learning Spanish and says he already likes much of Miami, with one exception: iguanas.

For now, he is focused on fitting in. “When I find the time to kind of be myself, I will be myself,” he said.
