True Food Kitchen has permanently closed its Miami restaurant at The Falls, 8888 SW 136th St., after the health-focused chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 4. The restaurant served its last customers on a Sunday, according to the report, and the company closed 12 locations nationwide.
The Falls was the chain’s only Miami location. It opened there on June 27, 2022. Restaurant Dive reported that the company carries about $42 million in debt, following years of financial pressure, failed expansion efforts and pandemic-era setbacks. Ghost kitchens and delivery-only operations reportedly disrupted staffing and the dining experience.
Annual sales were roughly flat at about $312 million last year, down from $314 million the year before. Fox Business reported that the company had only $1.6 million in unrestricted cash when it filed, enough to cover about two weeks of expenses without new financing.
The remaining 34 restaurants in 14 states will keep operating while the company pursues a court-supervised sale. That includes locations in Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. The company has also secured a commitment for about $20 million in financing, subject to court approval.
For Miami-area diners, the closure leaves one fewer option at The Falls, a shopping and dining center in Kendall.
