Boca Raton’s five city council members, sitting as the Community Redevelopment Agency board for downtown, unanimously approved The Sanborn on Monday. The vote was 5-0, and more than 20 supporters wearing Sanborn T-shirts applauded when it passed.

The project is planned for 100 Northeast First Avenue, on about 0.30 acres. It would include an eight-story private club of roughly 54,681 square feet. The city’s Planning & Zoning Board had recommended approval.

Plans call for a two-level, below-grade valet parking structure of about 11,200 square feet, which would be fully automated. The club would offer a cigar room with an outdoor space, two restaurants, a gym, a game room with a golf simulator and a bar, among other spaces.

Some speakers raised concerns about downtown density and traffic. The owner’s representative said the site is surrounded by multi-story buildings and showed a map to illustrate the point. One speaker called the club a good amenity for the city.

CRA member Yvette Drucker said the area needs revitalization and described the building as beautiful.
