The Miami Hurricanes baseball team played a shortened preseason scrimmage on Oct. 12 at Coral Gables, cut from six innings to 3.5 because of time constraints and weather. The start was pushed from 10:45 a.m. to just after 11 a.m., and play had to end by 12:30 p.m., which the source attributes likely to construction in the stands.

The hitters did most of the talking. Freshman catcher Jose Lopez went 2-for-2 with a double, a single and two RBIs. Freshman Anthony Murphy hit a one-out home run in the second inning that cleared the park. Fabio added a double and later advanced on a wild pitch.

Pitching was less consistent. Veteran TJ Coats looked sharp early but settled in after the home run. Junior transfer Michal Kovala, from the Czech Republic, allowed four runs in two innings. Dylan Mulcahy, a senior transfer from Stephen F. Austin, hit a batter and gave up one run in his inning of relief. Freshman Chase Swift finished the scrimmage with a walk and an RBI single allowed.

The team wraps up its first preseason week with a six-inning game set for 11:45 a.m. Seating is limited to the lower deck because of ongoing construction, and the writer advised fans to arrive early and bring an umbrella.
