The Dolphins Cancer Challenge reached $100 million raised for cancer research at its Oct. 11 event at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

The Channel 7 and Channel 18 foundations pushed the total over the mark with a combined $1 million contribution. James Ansin, co-president and general manager of WSVN/ABC Miami, said the station group wants to carry on the legacy of its founder, his father, and use both channels to spread the cancer message.

Javier Sanchez, the challenge’s executive director, called the gift huge and said the cancer community in South Florida appreciates it. The Miami Dolphins have hosted the event for almost 17 years, and the organization describes it as the largest fundraiser of its kind in the National Football League, with thousands of participants each year.

Dr. Stephen D. Nimer, director of the University of Miami Health System’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, said the work aims both to treat people with cancer and to prevent the disease. All money raised by participants goes toward research, care and treatment at Sylvester.

Andy Ansin, CEO of Sunbeam Television, said the stations can amplify local nonprofits and noted that new discoveries are bringing cures for cancers once thought untreatable.
