The Coral Springs Museum of Art has moved from 2855 Coral Springs Drive to a new space in the Modera complex at the intersection of University Drive and Sample Road in Downtown Coral Springs. The museum marked the move with a private opening for city leaders on Oct. 8 and a community event on the evening of Oct. 9.
The opening features “Picasso: A Graphic Journey,” which includes 57 original prints Pablo Picasso made between 1923 and 1972. The prints come from the collection of Timothy Collins of Los Angeles. A second show, “Cages and Collage” by artist Janet Gold, uses mixed media to explore memory, meaning and the passage of time.
Museum director Juliana Forero called the space “huge” and said the museum is a beacon for northwest Broward County.
The city’s capital budget, roughly $2 million, and $1 million from the Community Redevelopment Agency’s capital fund are paying for the build-out. The property owner is contributing about $500,000 in landlord and tenant allowances. The CRA will also pay $179,300 a year toward the lease, rising 3% annually until 2032, according to city information.
Admission remains free. The former gallery will become a rental space for private and community events, which will generate revenue for the city. Art classes will continue at the old location, which has drawing, painting, mixed media and ceramics studios, and one-day workshops will be held at the new site.
