Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, is scheduled to host a “community conversation” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Mi Pueblo, a Colombian restaurant at 10910 West Flagler St. in Sweetwater.
The event is aimed at advocates for undocumented migrants and public school teachers. Guests include Evelyn DeJesus of the American Federation of Teachers, Karla Hernandez Mats, the former president of United Teachers of Dade, and immigration advocates Cristina Jimenez and Greisa Martinez.
Nixon, 42, defeated Alexander Vindman in the Democratic primary. She will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the general election on Nov. 3. Nixon, who describes herself as a democratic socialist, has been running attack ads against Moody in recent weeks, and Democrats hope voter frustration with the national political climate could help them in the race.
For Miami-Dade voters, the event offers a chance to hear the candidate directly on immigration and public education, two issues that carry weight in the county’s largest Spanish-speaking communities. The event is open to the public, according to the report.
